Can we stop with the Kennedy love please? His most notable foreign policy moves were a failed invasion, nearly starting WW3 and helping to keep Vietnam going until LBJ could really screw it up. He was about as good as Bush abroad. He also told the Germans he was a jelly donut, but I can let that slide.

I agree with your view about how pathetic Bush is...having said that...let\'s look at why he is in power. Bush is exhibit A as to how awesomely powerful the Republican machine is. For all their well-justified outrage at the evil done by people in power, my fellow progressives by and large share a big blind spot. They just can\'t bring themselves to believe that everybody isn\'t, somewhere deep down inside, decent and well-meaning, just like them.

'); document.write('

Mehlman is obviously correct in describing Bush\'s attitude as "I\'m so tired of the public good. What about my good? What about my rich friends\' good?" Because Bush and his rich friends are sociopaths. Questions of conscience do not trouble them. They don\'t mean well, because they don\'t care-- in fact, they are predators who feed on the sheep around them.

Give Bush credit. Even with a Democratic congress he still gets mostly what he wants. When Clinton had a 65% approval rating he never even bothered to fight for anything liberal [we got welfare reform, and escalation of the Drug War, and numerous pro business policies which favor the rich and screw the poor such as no minimum wage increase; Even Regan at the height of his popularity could only dream about these accomplishments]. It doesn\'t matter how low his approval rating is Bush will get what he wants. Did Bush lose any power in Washington due to the complete destruction of an American city {new orleans]? SO TRUE! I live in Kansas and my husband is a farmer. He\'s from a fifth generation Kansas farm family. We all vote and no one in the extended family has ever voted for any Bush. We all actively campaigned against Bush/Cheney twice but were afraid to put a Gore or Kerry sticker on our car or sign in our yard for fear of vandalism. What I hear around here now is a bunch of silence. No one is proud they voted for Bush but they feel another Republican is their savior. The mantra around here in 2004 was "Don\'t much like Bush, but you wouldn\'t vote for Kerry would you"? Mostly they hate Hillary, gays, and anyone who isn\'t exactly like them due to race, creed, religion or color, and God Forbid anyone they fear might take their gun away. They are like ostriches with their heads in the sand. And yes, if you care to listen to the radio around here, your choices are Limbaugh or Paul Harvey. We do have cable, even out here in the sticks (and flushing toilets too!), but step into any doctor\'s waiting room or sit down at a lunch counter or bar and Fox News is blaring from the TV. Is there anybody who thinks with Gore as president we would have ended up in Iraq, or that he would have created the largest deficit in history or completely trashed the environmental and shredded the constitution? In this country where the public is so easily duped or just plain dumb, small wonder a bad guy like W. can get elected. In 2000 and 2004 a new crop of voters hit the pop-political scene. They called themselves "independents," but really they were anything but. They too largely bought into the argument that democrat/republican--no difference. Michael Lind wrote in all up in his landmark book "Made in Texas: George W. Bush and the Southern Takeover of American Politcs" which I nominate as the most important book of this century. Lind explains how the modern radical-right agenda (of which Bush-Cheney is a near perfect expression) is ripped out of the pages of the ante-bellum slave owners society, with rigid social castes, bible-thumping morality, militaristic hierarchy with landowners at the top, and a cruel demand for cheap labor (slaves). Lind calls this the "neo-Confederate" agenda, and explains how even poor whites, who owned no slaves and were treated ruthlessly by the system, still identified with the myth of their superiority.

A Democratic idealist may think, "How can we solve the health care crisis?" but the Republican is thinking, "How can I beat this bastard?" The Bushies, like the German Christians before them, have thought of themselves, and their privileges, as somehow under attack, never mind the real balance of power being so far in their favor as to make such aggressiveness grotesque. Without the same mentality, or at least acknowledging these Republican Neocons\', liberals are almost predestined to lose.
