A perspective on the study of social attitudes

.... In recent work on racial prejudice, Hartmann & Husband (1972) used an attitude scale. The findings were broadly that white people expressed more hostility towards coloured immigrants in Britain if they lived in 'immigrant' areas than if they lived in all-white areas.....

Many of the well-known difficulties surroundingy the F scale become less problematic when viewed in this light.... Yet common historical origin and function would seem to go a long way to explaining why its items should cohere in a pattern, in spite of the relative lack of logical, statistical or psychological consistency among them. Many of them represent what might loosely be called 'Victorian' values, stressing as they do discipline, subordination to authority, devotion to work, a Puritan and ascetic attitude to pleasure and the capacity to succeed through grit and willpower (Hartmann and Husband, 1974). Few F scale items can be regarded as foreign to the dominant value systems of modern Western societies.... They may be seen as historically necessary concomitants of industrialisation in a society with extreme inequalities.....
